Ease of maintenance, in the bush these were for the most part unnecessary for military operations.

This was the first and only H-391B courier to operate in Southeast Asia delivered in 1959, then came the H-395..

I have heard they left the gear leg fairings off to be on the lookout for cracks in the gearlegs. A good idea.

Most of the cracks appeared at the firewall where they elbow and the bolt that attaches to the oleo struts, the collar seems to be where most failures occurred allowing for unwanted gear collapse.
