Despite the photo of msn.511 wearing N272PM, the Jan 1964 USCAR records it as N272P Patterson McCarty Leasing Co, Oklahoma City, OK. FAA typo or painting error?

I suspect N272P was a temporary registry while they applied for a the N272PM special registry

If I ever get to my FAA files and someone reminds me we can find out if something was overlooked

It seems that registrations comprising one, two, or three numbers, followed by two letters, did not come into usage until some time between January and July 1966. None are recorded in the January 1 1966 USCAR, but registrations using this format do appear in the July 1 1966 USCAR.

Steve, I still believe I'm the one that made the errors and got some dates wrong and that I left something out of the 'History Paragraph' when I transcribed the paper FAA file for N272PM.

I believe you made things more confusing when you pointed out when the two letter suffix became available for the registry mark.

It was probably registered as N272P when it was sold in '63 de-regd and exported to the US and regd to Patterson-McCarty in '63 or early '64 and then sometime in mid '66, a special registry request was made by Patterson-McCarty Leasing for the registry N272PMand then it was sold maybe late'66 or '67.

This brings in the date of the accident and the sale of the aircraft in '64 as N272PM.

The only way this is going to be figured out is for me to get access to my FAA files or you could contact Barry Collman he has those FAA files also.

I should have made it clear that looking at the pre-July 1966 US Civil Aircraft Registers, "It seems that registrations comprising one, two, or three numbers, followed by two letters, did not come into usage until some time between January and July 1966" etc.. I suspect that registers published prior to July 1966 were unable to accommodate registrations in this format, so recorded them with the first letter of the suffix only.

Msn.511 was certainly registered to Patterson McCarty as N272PM prior to July 1965, by which time the USCAR shows it having changed hands and being registered to Stolairco Inc. If Patterson McCarty's request for a 'special' registration mark was made at the time it was imported from Canada, then it may have been assigned N272PM as early as when first registered, between June 1963 and January 1964. In that case, it may possibly have never been assigned N272P, but only reference to the individual FAA file will confirm this. USCAR Jul 1 1966 records the first appearance of msn.511 as N272PM, registered to Richard Mack.
