c/n 1257, built 06/67 as U-10D s/n 66-14355 USAF accepted 06/67, t/n “14355” USAF West Virginia Air National Guard, 130th Special Operations Squadron until 11/74, storage MASDC Davis-Monthan AFB AZ declared excess 01/77 released from storage 11/78, as N5387G to AL CAP 1 of 15 converted to trigear by Ken Noe and Dean tremaine 2/79 sold '83, Larry Montgomery SC sold '87, Richard Harrison AZ accident the engine quit after departure and a forced landing was executed in a field. Three gallons of water were found in the fuel @ Bartow FL 01/90 sold 90, Great Wood Stork Aircraft (Stephen Fessenden) installed nonstandard fork & nosewheel installed 1400 series individual seats sold '00, Winged Vision inc removed oversize nosewheel installed U-10 hard points on left wing for aerial camera platform using a one time STC installed muffler system designed by Steve Murrayobtaining STC in process, (Winged Vision inc) Bob Mikkleson Laytonsville, MD

Just to add.  The muffler system was added as a one time STC.  Same layout that was used by Pima County.  Only used for noise sensitive events such as the very few golf broadcasts not covered by the blimp and during Salt Lake and Vancouver Winter Olympics.  Thanks for the military info on the plane.

Yes.  We looked at different muffler setups.  Steve Murray constructed a system for Pima county and later for us.  At about the same time we flew the Schweizer SA-37, a slow flying, low noise, poor man's U2.  Same idea for a muffler setup that Steve was doing.  It works. Actually received a call from Les Schweizer.  A golf fan, he wanted to see if his airplane could be used for TV golf coverage.  Went up to Elmira, NY  in 18JC and flew the plane.  Very neat plane but not certified.  Only for government so did not go through any FAA certification.  Paul Schweizer told me that they had looked at the Helio but felt if was too expensive to build.  Too many parts he told me. Think this was the summer of 2000, before we had 5387G and the mufflers, that were added in I think 2001.  Used them for the first time for a golf event in Palm Springs in Aug 2001 and at the Salt Lake Olympics, Feb 2002.

This is what was pointed out to me by person sending photo
"Interesting photo of U-10D N5387G (c/n 1257) taken during 1981 (edit; probably shortly after conversion to trigear). Its faded grey paintwork still shows evidence of its former military history, including the MASDC inventory code '4HJ036', which identifies it as the thirty-sixth aircraft of its type to enter storage. 'HJ' identifies the type as a USAF U-10 (the Army Helios were allocated 'UE', where 'U' indicated a utility aircraft and the 'E' identified it as the fifth utility type stored on the Army inventory). The '4' indicates the year it entered storage, 1974. The green '+' (visible near the round window) is applied during the MASDC arrival process, after ejection seat pins are installed, munitions and flares are removed, and the aircraft made 'safe'. 66-14355 departed MASDC during November 1978, having been declared excess, January 12 1977, and was reportedly sold to Helio Aircraft, Pittsburg, KS. The 1981 date quoted for the photo, may actually be that printed on the slide mount when the film was processed."

According to my understanding 'The sold to Helio Factory' was actually a return to the factory to be converted to trigear aircraft for the CAP and the factory was Dean Tremaine and Ken Noe who did the conversion for them. Interesting that it took two years to get the conversion done.

I saw 5387G at Chandler Muni yesterday!  We don't get too many Helio's passing through here.

Still at Chandler. Leaving later in the week for LSU game.  Covered golf in Tucson last Friday.  Still flying 5387G and 18JC. We have added two 206 H Cessnas.  N2462G and N2461D. Check FlightAware. You’ll see our flights over stadiums and realize how crazy we are.  Need to do an engine in a few months.  Any suggestions?  JAARS did our last two. They’re out of the Helio business so need some suggestions.
