Jerry Jaques sold the airplane around give or take 1998 to EarthData aviation (later part of Fugro) where is was used for low level mapping operations. It was sold to a mapping company in south Dakota and subsequently ground looped and damaged wing/s resulted. It was sold to I believe current owner who fixed it. Photo with yellow paint job is taken in Maryland. Pilot standing in front of plane is Greg Goins. Hanger is grass strip owned by another pilot first name Bob, can't remember last name. Both flew for Earthdata Aviation. I also flew the airplane around that time but both of them had much more taildragger time at that time than I did.
-
On another note. This plane had a camera port when Earthdata purchased it from Jerry Jaques. It was then based out of Hagerstown Maryland. Earthadata had the camera port reconfigured and enlarged to fit a Leica Aerial mapping camera. A few mapping company's (Earthadata was one) were bought and came together as FUGRO and the plane was transferred/sold from Earthdata to the SD company.
While with Earthadata the plane was used on mapping missions mostly on the East coast but "Bob" did fly the plane to California for mapping. Long Flight!

Hey Doug,
The last picture may have been posted as an error. That is my current project (previously N295DK), 1968 H295 deregistered in US.
-
Probabably me misfiling I have about 2000 pics of course I have 20 of some planes none of others and some of those are of interest only for color or modification.
Thanks for heads up, I removed it.

The top photo is mine taken at Oceanside in March 1981 while popping in on Steven Murray when he owned it. I flew alot in that airplane and I have a companion photo for that shoot. I was going to fly it that day but inclement weather and no instrument rating precluded any further intent to fly, so off to Fallbrook we went. I logged about 230 hours in 62D and it was a great family machine for a 4-seater. Murray used it for parts hauling and later banner towing. At John Wayne Airport controllers always had fits when he flew in and landed in the last quarter on the North/South runway. So they often cleared him into the chopper pad.
-
Stephen,
OK this is your chance to either loan me the photos to get a better scan or do it yourself and also post the companion photo.
I'm still waiting for the Photos you were going to send months ago. If you are not going to send them don't say or insinuate you will, Please.
Do you need/want me to mark that top photo as being from your collection. Its not much trouble to do.
Doug

I have your address and will send all of it soon. it has been nuts around here lately.
So, be patient.
-
Also Aviation leasing was umbrella corp for all of Earthdata's planes....yeah I was about a year off...Earthdata bought around early 1997....
PS...You guys crack me up!! Thanks for the laughs!
-
see latest photo as XB-FEJ also still waiting on photos from several individuals

Sold 8/15, rereg as N395H (for model H-395) Gordon Cragg Gloster, TX stationed 1AX7 re-install Helio bench for middle seats now 4 seat configuration with enlarged heavy duty cargo area
Edit and added a current photo above waiting for picture with registry N395H which is pending authorization to apply
Notice grab bar with utility door opened. This was something I intended to eventually do as a removable bar, I also intended to remove the shirttail catcher, and I felt it would improve the crashworthiness of the cage.
Any opinions on crashworthiness improvement?
-
Hello All;
The bar is actually a very useful addition to a Helio with the LH utility door. We all know that the roll cage "flexs" somewhat on landing. This bar, absorbs some of that flexing. The bar is removable so it does not affect the cargo loading. A very interesting modification.

Added Mag article above to c/n 514
Picture placed in article is a cropped version of a photo above replacing a picture of c/n 001.
Gordon has it been sold yet?
-
newer article from Flying again c/n 514 is the Helio used
-
I recently came across this photo. Can anyone tell me if it is a current photo or an older photo.
I wonder why c/n 514 was painted with a quasi (not even authentic, as far as I can tell) Air America paint scheme?
514 has no Air America (CIA) history.
the second picture is c/n 504 with actual air america blue paint scheme click on this previous post https://flyhelio.com/smf/index.php?topic=757.msg3761#msg3761
This was Air Americas 4th Helio most of the later Helios were unpolished aluminum with the top of the cowling painted flat black
I opened the two photos at bottom of queue at top of page
-
Doug,
The picture above of Jodie and 514 is in Mena, AR on the day we picked it up from the paint shop. So, yes, it is current. The guys at Rose Aircraft Services did a great job.
Kevin
-
Thanks for info Kevin,
I like this paint scheme and color better than any of the previous ones, but still curious about the Air America is it just because people seem to like the Air America, 'Helio' connection? I really like that it didn't get painted with a 1400 series or H7/800 paint scheme.
Jodie ?, appears to be enjoying posing with his Helio.
-
When someone buys or is donated an aircraft they have the right to paint or change things that have been previously modified if they want. It doesn’t matter if other people like it or not. I think to make comments like this is very rude. Instead you should be happy that another Helio has been restored to keep it flying for another 50 years.
-
Andrew, sorry to have offended you but sometimes that happens. I did not intend to imply that I disliked 514s paint scheme. Just curious about why an Air america scheme theme, whatever was used.
I don't dislike the paint scheme you have on your Helio either, but will say I like the paint scheme on 514 better.
Talk about crappy paint scheme look at this Helio it didn't have a good paint scheme until after I sold it. Now in my opinion it has one of the better paint schemes. But I might be prejudiced in favor of it.

Doug,
I will admit that 1233 looks much better than when I saw it in Pittsburg with only one wing before Dean installed the square window.
After Kevin’s rigging of 1233 it really is a nice straight flying Helio even without the aileron trim installed.
-
Added a b/w picture of c/n 514 as N4162D in original livery, probably the way it came from the factory.
Opened at top of page as #1 in the queue.
-
Great thing is ...when you own it you get to paint it any color you want....remember the polka dot hello's?
-
I was wondering if anyone had any info on installing the "grab bar" ? Are the attach points welded or bolted to the frame ? Is there an stc for it or just field approval ? I would like to install the fittings before blasting and painting. Thanks, Paul
-
Paul,
That's a 1200 series cage. I thought you were rebuilding 1434? Did you get a second project?
-
It is 1292. I will use most of the parts from 1434 but trying to keep it legal. 1434 was registered in Canada and everyone I talk to says that it's impossible to get it legal. 1292 didn't need much welding either. I will need some 1200 seats. I've been flying 028 and having a lot of fun with that. Debating whether or not to fly it to California next month or take the old reliable 172. Paul
-
Hey Paul,
Back to the "grab bar". Are you talking about a bar to help pull yourself up on the outside of the airplane?
Kevin
-
Hi Kevin,
No, it’s the removable bar between the bottom truss and top truss on the pilots side of the fuselage. It’s in the picture on the first page of this thread. Paul
-
Paul,
That removeable bar in 514 is there because of the style of cargo door that is installed. Most cargo door installations do not have that bar.
Kevin
-
If so that is a one of a kind cargo door.
Pictures appear to indicate that is also the only Helio that has that grab bar
And there is nothing in the FAA files that seems to show an installation of that grab bar.
Unless there is something in the 337 of the installation of the 10 inch camera port in the floor of the passenger area that I am overlooking.
