I had a picture of N87763 as all white in the maintenance instruction hanger but apparently misfiled it.

Jim metzler recently mentioned that he was working on this Helio I asked if there was a change in its status if Jaars was possibly preparing it for sale but never recieved a reply. Anyone else know?

Yes, this Helio is owned by JAARS, and is being worked on by Helio Services. The current plan it to sell it when it is complete, which will be late in the year. I'll get some pictures together and upload them. Jim

Something I'm curious about: on the H395 posts, you indicate that the move from a U10A to U10B was related to a gross weight increase. Where are you getting that? Is it in military records or documents somewhere? I'll attach some pages from the Military manual and it indicates the differences between the U10A and U10B to be equipment variations and not gross weight differences but maybe there is other information out there. I always thought all H395's had a factory civilian gross weight of 3000 lbs but maybe the military Helios were different; I've just never seen that distinction anywhere. Jim

Here are a few pictures. Sorry, I don't have any current good side shots, the wings are in the way. The wings are ready to install this week sporting new tomahawks, roller bearings, fuel cells etc. With the "saddle" pictured, the wing installation is an easy two man job. I'll try to get a picture hoisting them in place. Jim

Jim, Thanks for reply especially on the up gross. This was my interpretation of several things an upgross that begins with c/n 556 the middle of a U-10B contract. Although at time of STC all earlier examples in that contract were no longer in existence.

an e-mail from a military aircraft guru.
The earliest date I can find for ‘U-10B’ is 62346 (12.12.62) when 25913 at Eglin was noted as such on its records closely followed on 62351 by 25912.  The date ‘63059’ (28.2.63) appears to have been the date on which the USAF decided to refer to all aircraft built from 23608 as ‘U-10B’.  Therefore production aircraft on or after this date appear as ‘U-10B’ and a number of in-service U-10A (ie those between 25907 and 25920) are retrospectively amended to U-10B.

My rewording of another e-mail I haven't located yet.
 Clarence Brent (Factory DER) designed upgross modification for c/n 547 to
                         c/n 560 (U-10A 3000lb to U-10B 3300lb) becoming standard with H-395 c/n 561
                         special request by CIA ?  but never placed on the type certificate
                                                                                                           Since I couldnt find any change to type certificate I added the last line, ....                                                                                                                                                      not quite sure where I came up with CIA.

The E-mail actually was only about a factory authorization by Clarence Brent for a 200 lb increase in gross for USAF the information was incomplete I assumed the missing part included structural changes because it mentions changes which very well may have been equipment changes.

I also had contract 63-13166/13185 US Army Special Forces and CIA Helios U-10A (but built as U-10B except 13184 and 13185)

Some of the individual files mention being converted to U-10B nothing actually about any coversion looks like I will need to go back and edit all of those and change the wording. whatever the change was that gave them a U-10B redesignation happened 02/63,
how about "equipment change to U-10B 02/63"
