From 28 August until the end of November 1970, a 13-man 7th SOS crew, commanded by Major Irl L. Franklin, participated in the preparation and execution of the Son Tay Raid, which was an attempt to liberate POWs held in North Vietnam. Flying Combat Talon 64-0523 (assigned to the 15th SOS at Nha Trang AB, South Vietnam), the 7th SOS crew lead a dissimilar formation of H-53s and an H-3 deep into North Vietnam. Although no prisoners were found at Son Tay, the Combat Talon portion of the operation went off without a hitch. All aircraft and crews returned safely to Thailand after the mission.

N4XV never served in South Vietnam, U-10B 63-8091 and 63-8092 were the only float-equipped Helio's in Special Ops at the time, the 7th SOS was activated in Hurlburt Field in 1964 and the U-10's were sent to Sembach, Germany and later reactivated at Ramstein AFB. They were also flown at 3600 pounds and operated as "Speaker Birds" or Litter Bug ops.

OK Army special forces records seem to be misleading, there is the brief history posted above,

and a second version below

c/n 585, military s/n (63-8092), built 02/63 as U-10B military t/n 63-8092 USAF activated Hurlburt Field 02/63, s/n 63-8092 transfer as US Army 10th Special Forces Group 1st Battalion Bad Tolz Germany float plane until late '66 early '67, transfer USAF 7th ACS Sembach Air Base, Germany as float plane until (date  unknown), returned to US Air Force Special Operations Command, 1st Special Operations Wing, 317th Special Operations Squadron, Eglin Air Force Auxiliary Field #9 (Hurlburt Field), FL (Code AO) 05/72, Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ for storage 05/75, loaned as N87823 US Customs Air Support Branch, Naval Air Station, “Belle Chase” LA 10/75, FAA advised that it was being turned over to General Service Administration for disposal and that it was “flyable transfer '76, County of Chambers Health dept TX sold '80, E.A. Bigby (Big Bee Aviation) OR sold '80, rereg as N4XV (XV suggested by Ron Sutphin is also defunct S/Vietnam registry prefix) Tom Teufel OR, Ron Sutphin helped convert from military U-10B to civilian H-395 and modify fuel system to civilian configuration to utilize LR 120 gal fuel sys install 3,300lb up-gross sold '81, Marvin Grendahl AK placed on Edo 3460 floats installed individual front seats (1400 series ?) honeycomb floor boards fishing pole tube in rear bulkhead transfer '06, (Helio II llc) Andrew Grendahl Anchorage, AK (sold ?) '14, for sale by Marvin Grendahl $160K 907-244-8379

take your pick your pick and tell me why.

My information came from a combination of US Army and USAF records many US Army records for special forces are missing. since all U-10s are accepted by the USAF before being passed to the Army the intent may have been for 38092 to go to S/Vietnam

some more conflicting information from special ops site 7th ACS I think. See picture reportedly only one was on floats, leads me to believe the first post, s/n 63-8092 US Pacific Air Forces 14th SOW, Nha Trang S/Vietnam, float-equipped 5th SOS until 05/67, may be correct and it did in fact do a short tour of S/Vietnam 63-67 but they say they have 2 helios so what is the other either the second helio showed up later or they put it on floats at a later time.
